Five distinct regions. Hundreds of kilometres of wild water. Each one fished differently, each one worth knowing intimately.
Victoria holds some of the finest wild trout and bass fishing in the southern hemisphere. From the granite-lined streams of the High Country to the wild gorges of East Gippsland, every region has its own character, its own hatches, and its own demands on the angler.
Where we fish on any given day depends on season, conditions, and what you're after — and we'll always put you on the best water available.
Remote alpine streams
The Victorian High Country is the heartland of wild trout fishing in Australia. Tight, technical streams wind through mountain ash forest and open alpine meadows. Brown and rainbow trout hold in clear, cold water — often visible, always wary. This is dry fly country at its finest.
Victoria's premier trout river
The Mitta Mitta River is widely regarded as one of Victoria's finest trout streams. Fed by the snowfields and running cold and clear through deep gorges and open flats, it holds exceptional populations of wild brown trout. The evening rise here is something you won't forget.
Wild rivers, wild country
East Gippsland is remote, rugged, and largely unfished. The Mitchell and Snowy rivers run through some of the most spectacular wilderness in Victoria — old-growth forest, deep gorges, and pristine water. Access is challenging, which is exactly why the fishing is so good. This is expedition territory.
Legendary water
The Snowy River needs no introduction. One of Australia's most iconic waterways, it runs cold and fast through deep gorges in the Snowy Mountains. The bass here are strong, wild, and hard-won. Raft fishing is the best way to access the most remote sections — and the most rewarding.
Classic valley fishing
The Ovens River and its tributaries wind through the fertile valley between Harrietville and Wangaratta. Accessible, productive, and beautiful — the Ovens is a great river for anglers of all levels. The upper reaches near Harrietville offer classic mountain stream fishing, while the lower river closer to Bright opens into broad pools holding large fish.
